Maurine Sutter

Walking the dunes and backshore found near Provincetown on Cape Cod, photographer Maurine Sutter captures stunning views of a place with few reference points to the modern day world.  Having lived and worked in one of the few remaining artist dune shacks found there, she strives to make photographs that reveal the fragile beauty of this part of the National Seashore.

Using both black and white as well as color imagery, her work is characterized by a wide range of subjects and styles and defies being typed.  With five distinctly different series all done about Cape Cod, her photographs include classical landscapes, contemporary studies of plastic littering the shoreline that borders the dunes and even a humorous series made of shops selling inflatable beach toys during the summer season.

Dedicated to using only archival materials to make her work in small, limited editions, she uses both the very latest innovative contemporary techniques for presentation as well as traditional, museum quality framing.

In recent years, her photographs have been included in the permanent collections of both The Cape Cod Museum of Art as well as The Provincetown Art Association & Museum.  Juried group exhibitions that selected her work include; Copley Society of Art, Boston, South Shore Art Center, Cohasset and The Emerson Art Center, in Concord, Massachusetts.
